Q.1 What is meant by the term office automation ?
A.1 Office automation refers to an office equipped with modern facilities such as word processors, computers, data base, teleconferencing, electronic mail (e-mail), electronic desk facilities etc.

Q.2 What is a word processor ?
A.2 The heart of a word processor is a computer. It has a keyboard and a visual display unit. Like a typewriter it produces typed matter resembling printed material. Q.3 What are computer generated graphics ?
A.3 Computer graphics are used by designers, artists, engineers, surgeons etc, to create new designs and patterns on the VDU of the computer. These designs are used for the production purposes.

Q.4 What is data base ?
A.4 Data base is a computer file of information on individual subjects or a combination of subjects. It needs a computer and a modem. Data base is being used in many offices for news information, metrological information, financial matter, libraries, legal proceedings etc.

Q.5 What is gateway ?
A.5 It is the link of a computer data base into the view data system, so that people can look at the information in it.

Q.6 What is teleconferencing ?

A.7 Audio conferencing makes use of public dial-up telephones. In this the participants at different places can hear each other on telephones.

Q.12 What is an electronic desk ?
A.12 The electronic desk station includes a large monitor screen, a keyboard and a device for positioning a pointer on the screen. The desk is connected to the entire office system. A printer is used to enhance the station's capabilities.

Q.13 What is a microwriter ?
A.13 It is an electronic word processor but without a standard keyboard. It has a combination of six keys to produce all the letters of the alphabet, numbers, symbols etc. When a command is given the text moves across the one line display and is stored inside the machine. A.14 It is a two-way communications system where you can get information from distant computers and respond to it. Viewdata works through phone or interactive cable TV.
